Message Title: How to Know Him

Highlights:

  1. As Christians our job description is: To know and make known God!

  2. God’s commandments are given for our protection and provision.

    1. We can obey because we have to, because we need to, or because we want to.

    2. If you are not keeping His commandments, you are not growing in knowing Him.

  3. Ways to know God:

    1. Academically and Intellectually – Bible Study

    2. Prayerfully and Contemplatively – Praying

    3. Personally and Relationally – Journaling

    4. Intimately – Unplug

Discussion Questions:

  1. Instead of trying to cover sin, a true believer confesses sin and tries to conquer sin by walking in the SPIRIT and in the light of God’s Word. Where have you seen this in your own life? What areas of your life is God wanting to bring the light of His Word and greater freedom from sin?

  2. Pastor Phil encourages us to unplug from the various distractions in life to intimately know God. In what ways can you unplug from Facebook, tv, cares of this life, doubts, fears, etc., and plug into God? How do you let go of your agenda and get quiet before the Lord?

  3. In the presence of God we get to respond to Him instead of making Him respond to us. Share of a time that you really engaged in deep fellowship with the Lord and your response to Him changed your perspective, heart, and you really let His spirit change yours.

Key Scriptures, Quotes, and Definitions:

Psalm 46:10

10 Be still, and know that I am God…

John 1:10-11

10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

1 John 2:3-6

3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

Commandments – G1785; injunction, i.e. an authoritative prescription

Injunction – a writ granted by a court of equity whereby one is required to do or to refrain from doing a specified act.

John 14:15

15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.

Abides – G3306; to stay, not stray
