The Glory of the Lord.

Pastor Phil Vance

Highlights:

Where do we see the Glory of God.

We see, feel or sense it when God’s manifested presence shows up.

Biblical Examples: Israel in the Wilderness Exodus 16:1-15

God would answer a prayer than a complaint, but out of His goodness, He will answer a complaint.

God would rather answer your prayer of faith then your complaint of grief.

On Mount Sinai Exodus 24: 16-17

God calls us into and through things that can be scary.

The Tabernacle Exodus 40: 34-35

Theophany: a visible manifestation to humankind of God

Solomon’s Temple

The Glory of God that reminds us that we are not God. That we need Him.

The coming of Jesus

Luke 2:13-14 In the form of man, the infant child, Jesus.

Christ makes the Glory of God not only possible but visible and personal.

As sinners, we should be thankful that we see God’s glory in the person of His Son, because that glory, when beheld by faith, saves us rather than consumes us.

The Glory of God Lost:

1 Samuel 4

In the continued presence of what was not pleasing to the Lord, the presence of God was lost.

Departs from the temple and Jerusalem. Ezekiel 11:23

Due to presumption and disobedience.

God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. John Piper

Our Job Description: Man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

What does God’s Glory do?

It showcases Him.

Some things happen in life so that God’s glory can be displayed.

It conceals some things with the purpose of provoking us to come and investigate.

It changes us

It protects us.

It motivates us.

It reveals to us the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Discussion Questions:

Share current and past situations in life where the Lord brought you through a season of difficulties that resulted in a greater revelation of the Glory of God.

How do we experience more of the Glory of God?

Key Scriptures, Quotes and Definitions:

Exodus 16:1-15 The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt. 2 In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.” 4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. 5 On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.”6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you will know that it was the Lord who brought you out of Egypt, 7 and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?” 8 Moses also said, “You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.” 9 Then Moses told Aaron, “Say to the entire Israelite community, ‘Come before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’” 10 While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward the desert, and there was the glory of the Lord appearing in the cloud. 11 The Lord said to Moses, 12 “I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’” 13 That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. 14 When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor. 15 When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.

Exodus 24: 16-17 16 and the glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the Lord called to Moses from within the cloud. 17 To the Israelites the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain.

Exodus 40:34-35 34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 Moses could not enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

1 Samuel 4:21 21 She named the boy Ichabod,[a] saying, “The Glory has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband.

Ezekiel 11:23 23 The glory of the Lord went up from within the city and stopped above the mountain east of it.

Luke 2:13-14 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

2 Corinthians 4:6 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

John 11: 4 “4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”
