Thirst

HIghlights:

God made you on purpose with the capacity to thirst. Spiritual thirst is a God shaped vacuum, a void that can only be truly filled by the one who created you, God.

Thirst will drive you to do some NOT-SO-GOOD, maybe even stupid things to fill it. If thirst is not satisfied, it will leave you hurting. Ultimately, it can kill you.

We are far too easily satisfied with the delicacies of this world instead of being satisfied with the authentic substance of God’s provision.

Discussion Questions:

Pastor Phil used the illustration of the warranty on the boat motor. A no fault warranty that will repair any damage done regardless of who was at fault. What ways have you done damage to your life and how has God exercised a warranty, HIs ability to fix and repair, when the damage was your doing, not His?

We all have longings, things that we thirst for. These longings are tremendously powerful.

What would you say are the things that you long for most?

Why do you want those things?

How has the fulfillment of or the unfulfillment of those longings affected your relationship with God?

What does it take to change a taste preference? How do we adjust our appetite so that we thirst and long for the water from heaven instead the counterfeit and the substitutes of this world? How long does it take to adjust from an unhealthy diet to one that is truly substantive?

Key Scriptures:

3 But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?” 4 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.” 5 The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah[a] and Meribah[b] because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?” Exodus 17:3-7

Psalm 63:1-5New International Version (NIV)

A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.

1 You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.
2 I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
3 Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
4 I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

Isaiah 55: 1-3

“Come, all you who are thirsty,

come to the waters;

and you who have no money,

come, buy and eat!

Come, buy wine and milk

without money and without cost.

2 Why spend money on what is not bread,

and your labor on what does not satisfy?

Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,

and you will delight in the richest of fare.

3 Give ear and come to me;

listen, that you may live.

I will make an everlasting covenant with you,

my faithful love promised to David.
