Anchored to Heaven
Highlights:
We are to live longing for Heaven’s reality. We are just passing through.
We are anchored to keep us from drifting.
God wants s to walk in the narrowness of the truth.
The easiest voice to hear is the devil’s. It takes effort to hear the voice of The Lord.
Discussion Questions:
What does this truth mean to you? This is not our home, we are just passing through?
What does it mean to be narrow as a Christ follower? Doesn’t this seem opposite to what our culture says we must be?
How has heaven been present in the midst of the difficult things you are going through? What does it mean to you that heaven comes to earth in your own life?
Key Scriptures and Quotes:
Our Mission: To make devoted followers of Jesus, in community, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
-“This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Matthew 6:9-10 NIV
Sojourner: a person who for a period of time, lives in a place which is not his normal residence.
-All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
Hebrews 11:13-16 NIV
-Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.
1 Peter 2:11 NIV
-We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews 6:19-20 NIV
Orthodox: straight or right. Right opinion or to straighten out.
-“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Matthew 7:13-14 NIV
-I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”
Genesis 28:15-17 NIV
