Truth Endures Perilous Times

Highlights:
1. Some people are rightly dividing the truth but some people are wrongly subtracting the truth.
2. We must come to know the Word of truth so we can use it in our day-to-day life.
3. At the heart of every problem is a problem in the heart.
Discussion Questions:
1. Discuss together what truths our culture would like to see subtracted from the Bible.
2. We subtract from the truth in order to live a lie. What is the appeal of living a lie? What can be seen in the lie that draws us to it even when we know that it is not the truth.
3. “At the heart of every problem is a problem in the heart.” What heart problems are behind the oppositions to truth you experience in the lives of those close to you?
Personally, can you identify “heart problems” you have with living the truth.
4. In difficult times, what enduring truths mean the most to you?
Key Scriptures and Quotes:
1 Timothy 2: 3-4
This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.
2 Timothy 2: 15-16
Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth. Avoid worthless, foolish talk that only leads to more godless behavior. NIV
2 Timothy 3: 1-9
You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that! They are the kind who work their way into people’s homes and win the confidence of vulnerable women who are burdened with the guilt of sin and controlled by various desires. (Such women are forever following new teachings, but they are never able to understand the truth.) These teachers oppose the truth just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses. They have depraved minds and a counterfeit faith. But they won’t get away with this for long. Someday everyone will recognize what fools they are, just as with Jannes and Jambres.
2 Thessalonians 2: 9-12
This man will come to do the work of Satan with counterfeit power and signs and miracles. He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them. So God will cause them to be greatly deceived, and they will believe these lies. Then they will be condemned for enjoying evil rather than believing the truth.
