Pastor Phil Vance: Salvation Needs a Workout

Highlights:
1.) Paul did not say WORK FOR your own salvation, but WORK OUT your own salvation. God’s job is to WORK IN us salvation… Our job is to WORK OUT that salvation!

2.) With a good work out, you need a good diet, as well. We need to take in the Word of God as we work out our faith.

3.) God wants to get out of us more than we think we can get out of ourselves. God is our personal trainer and He wants to get us out of our comfort zone!

4.) When we complain and grumble, we are telling those around us that we believe God is doing a very poor job, and if given the opportunity, we could do much better.

Discussion Questions:
1.) How do we “work out” our salvation? How can you tell if your Christianity is in shape?

2.) Identify one way that you can “work out” your salvation this week and make a plan to do it.

3.) Is God getting out of you all that He put in? If you were to breathe you last breath right now, is there anything that would be left on the table?

4.) Our salvation needs to be worked out of us with fear and trembling. What does that mean to you?

Key Scriptures:
For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people. (1 Corinthians 14:33 NIV)

Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. (Philippians 2:12, 13 NIV)

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. (Hebrews 4:1 NIV)

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. (Philippians 2:14-16 NIV)

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16 NIV)
