Highlights:
1) A Christian soldier must endure hardship and must not be entangled (G1707: to entwine) with the things of this world.
2.) A.Christian athlete must compete according to the rules, must run to win, must be temperate, and must discipline their body.
3.) A Christian farmer must (gets to) partake of the crops.
4.) You need Know God and No the devil.
Discussion Questions:
1.) Paul uses the metaphor of a farmer, soldier and an athlete to describe endurance and perseverance in our walk with God. Which of the three do you relate to and why?
2.) For the purpose of encouraging one another, describe a recent decision you made to follow God’s rules for your life. Did you say no or yes? In what ways did that decision help you to know God (and no the devil) more?
3.) In what areas of your relationship with God have you been working hard? Have you experienced God’s reward or does the it still seem distant? Pray for each other to persevere in the plans and grace of God for incorruptible prize.
Key Scriptures:
Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules. The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops.
2 Timothy 2:3-6 NIV
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 NIV
