Serving the Servant

11/17/2013
Highlights:
1.) Following Jesus involves serving. Do we follow Jesus for what He can do for us or for we can do for Him?
2.) Jesus tells us that when we are serving others, we are in fact serving Him. In the same manner, when we neglect others, we neglect Him.
3.) Service is doing for others what we don’t have to do. Followers of Jesus always go the extra mile in service.
Discussion Questions:
1.) What is the position of your heart as you serve? How can you keep yourself poised to be ready to serve whenever the need arises?
2.) Many people find it difficult to let other people serve them. God tells us that He honors our service to Him (and thus to other people.) How do you respond to others as they fulfill God’s call to serve you?
3.) How can we add value to both our lives and to the lives of others by doing what we don’t have to do?
Key Scriptures:
-Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me. (John 12:20-26 NIV)
– “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:40 NIV)
– For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45 NIV)
– If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. (Matthew 5:41, 42 NIV)
